Checking brand names and checking ideas for their "uniqueness

You have found a name that perfectly describes your company? Wonderful! Now you can start an important research with our brand name check. Of course, you now have to make sure that no other company has registered the same (or a similar) name.

Furthermore, you benefit from informative details about existing trademarks. For example, you can see when trademark XY was registered. You also have the option of filtering according to individual criteria. You will receive the results within 30 to 60 seconds.

Important information on the legal background

Please note that you can only get a first impression with this tool. Further research work, for example by an experienced trademark attorney, cannot be replaced by this tool! If no results are found, this does not necessarily mean that your idea can be implemented 100%. But: with our free trademark examination tool you can get a good introduction to the subject.

For example, the trademark check lists all (partially) identical trademarks that could get in the way of your word creation. We currently use the trademark database of the German Trademark and Patent Office, EU trademarks as well as international registrations, Swiss and US trademarks as a reference basis.

When searching for brand names, please also note that names can be protected in different classes. An experienced trademark and patent attorney is also the right contact in this case. He can tell you in which of these classes you should have your idea protected. Tip: You can also do your own preliminary research and look for classes relevant to your field of application. More on this below. But as I said - in case of an emergency, it is better to clarify the matter with a specialist!

The advantages of a trademark examination

In short: our tool for brand name testing is an uncomplicated contact point for all those who would like to know whether there is anything that stands in the way of registering their brand name. Our trademark check can offer you a first orientation aid. However, in order to make a final decision, it is always necessary to look at the details.

Checking brand names is too high for you? Then start with a simple domain name check or social media name check.

No name finding without a name check! Above all, in addition to a domain and search engine check, trademark research is absolutely indispensable. The Trademark Check allows you to check whether your favorite names have already been trademarked by someone else.

Depending on the setting (> Gear symbol), it takes approx. 30-60 seconds to comb through the trademark records. You will then receive your results, which include all of the trademarks that contain your term.

This is an identity search, i.e. all identical or partially identical trademarks are listed. For example, brands such as Paperduck, paperus and Cerapaper are found for the word "paper". The "i" symbol allows you to quickly display the most important facts about the trademark: where and when the trademark was protected, and in which goods or services classes (e.g. class 9 for software or 35 for advertising).

There is also a link to each trademark where you can read all the details and find out more about the trademark owner.

NameRobot examines the trademarks of the German Trademark and Patent Office as well as the EU trademarks (which are protected throughout the EU) and the IR trademarks (International Registrations). Furthermore, Swiss (Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property) and US trademarks (The United States Patent and Trademark Office) are also searched.

Caution: Few or no hits does not mean that your name idea is 100% safe. Because there are a number of details that need to be taken into account when examining a trademark, such as the search for similar trademarks. You should therefore use the Trademark Search to gain a first impression of the trademark situation. It is advisable to consult a trademark attorney before actually using the name. They can also help you protect your name as a trademark, by the way.

Classes of goods and services for trademarks

Trademarks can be protected in 45 different classes of goods and services. They are called "Nice Classes".

Each trademark application must specify the goods and/or services for which the trademark is to be registered. It is also worth taking a look at the goods/services before filing a trademark application. If you have found an identical trademark via the trademark check, you can see in which classes it is registered.

Example: You want to check whether the name idea XYZ is already protected for musical instruments (Class 15). You find such a trademark via the trademark check, but it is registered for something such as clothing (Class 25). So you can quickly assess that this trademark is probably not relevant.

Where can you find the relevant class(es)?

You can enter your relevant terms in this database in order to find the corresponding classes. There is also an overview of the most important terms per class.
